What does it mean to Seek First the Kingdom?
“But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.” — Matthew 6:33
1. “Seek first…”
This means make it your priority—above all else. Jesus is saying, before you chase after material needs, success, or comfort, aim your heart toward God and His purposes.
““But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.” — Matthew 6:33
2. “…the kingdom of God…”
God’s kingdom is His rule and reign—not just in heaven, but here and now in the hearts and lives of His people. Seeking it means desiring:
God's will to be done in your life
God to be king over your decisions, relationships, desires, and goals
The advancement of His glory and gospel in the world
3. “…and His righteousness…”
This refers to:
Living rightly before God (a life shaped by His values)
Trusting in Christ’s righteousness, not our own efforts
Letting His character and holiness shape how we live, love, and serve
4. “…and all these things will be added to you.”
In context (Matthew 6:25–34), Jesus is talking about worrying over food, clothes, and needs. He’s reassuring us:
“If you focus on Me and My kingdom, I’ll take care of what you need.”
This isn’t a prosperity promise—it’s a call to trust God to provide, so we’re not consumed by anxiety or distraction.
Put God first—His reign, His ways, His purposes—and you can trust Him to meet your needs.
It’s an invitation to live for what matters most, with the peace that God will faithfully provide what we truly need.
